We will still be writing In approaching years…
September 4, 2008

I do my writing old school, pencil and paper.
I’ve been free associating composing for the past month as part of my practice routine and feel some songs coming on.
I know – this post was like an interrupted thought. Sorry….
I was just so excited to finally get something on paper. As much as we creative artist types like to think it’s all about that “moment of inspiration”? It’s not. At all. It’s all about practicing. A lot. Just like you have to practice your instrument so that you can get what you want to come out of the end of it, you also have to practice composing.
For the past 6 weeks or so I’ve been focusing pretty much on my trombone and trying to get some practicing in during the week after I get home from work and then around the same time on the weekends. I do my warm up routine, a Rochut and then mostly just play off the top of my head because I don’t have a keyboard at my disposal to really get into the writing. It’s best to do your composing around the same time each day.
Now that I’m sorta getting a routine, I’m starting to feel inspired. And that is the creative process in action.
Hope to have a playing opportunity nailed down in the next few days…more info to come!
